First Christian Church has a distinguished music program that reaches back to the founding of the congregation in the 1870's. The excellent acoustics of our sanctuary, the light-filled stained glass and our beautiful tracker Létourneau organ create an inspiring space to worship our Creator each Sunday and throughout the week. ALL people of any ability who desire to improve their musical gifts over time are welcome to join the Music Ministry.
Chancel Choir - For ALL adults who desire to sing! There is no audition requirement. We practice on Thursdays from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. in the Music Room (basement near the church offices) and sometimes the Sanctuary. The choir sings most Sundays at either or both worship services. The repertoire is varied and includes works by the usual masters of musical form, as well as Spirituals, Psalm settings, and music from contemporary genres. We also present larger works for special occasions.
Handbell Choir - For youth and adult music readers. First Christian Church owns a 6-octave set of Schulmerich handbells, and well as a 4-octave set of Schulmerich handchimes. We practice on Thursdays from 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary. While hand bell ringing may have started as a secular activity, many churches use hand bells to enhance worship. This ensemble often plays during preludes, special music, and accompanies congregational singing. A music cornerstone of festive holidays and other special occasions, our ringers are also dedicated to great music and fun fellowship.
Grace Notes Choir - For children and youth ages K-12. Rehearsals are after the 11:00 service on Sundays: children and youth eat lunch together in the Fellowship Hall and then rehearse until 1:30 pm. Part of the Children's Ministry, we learn songs, play hand chimes and other instruments, develop skills in music reading and vocal technique, and have a great time! Music is a key component in cognitive development and spiritual growth.
